Reasonableness Standard (2013)

The much-maligned sound of the trombone always appealed to me. This small semi-improvised piece explores a lower variety of trombone tone. It is structured so as to showcase the beautiful sound of two trombones playing certain intervals, and to return almost from any situation to a rising melodic figure. Melodic lines are not always easy to play and disregard certain rules of writing for trombone – performers are asked to play "awkwardly" if necessary, because I have composed the piece in a way that allows many imperfections, little pauses, improvised trill speeds, and so on. Thus the title is not just a legal term, but also a inside joke for trombone players.

Two years after the original piece, I made an extended transcription of it for two pianos. It is a considerably more complex piece than the trombone version, and contains some of what I think is my best piano writing. The score is dotted with exceptionally numerous fermatas indicating all kinds of pauses – some of critical importance, but not marked as such – so the title is as relevant here as it is in the trombone original.
