Symmetrical Sigils (2016)

This collection of 21 small pieces was composed the way graphic signs (such as letters and symbols) are created: partly symmetrical and/or linear design, partly random selection of shapes, and so on. The result is like an alphabet, but one that only exists as music, not as letters, glyphs, or characters. The preface included in the score gives a good idea of what the pieces are like.

Many of my scores allow for freedom in interpretation, but these go particularly far: as characters, they encourage calligraphic techniques, as in Chinese calligraphy, where a character may be completely distorted and barely readable, yet a perfect part of a design which has purpose and clarity.
