|The Anthropic Principle (2013)|
|for snare and two drums|
The weak version of the anthropic principle is this: conditions observed in the universe must allow the observer to exist. This piece is, among other things, a satirical commentary on said principle. A universe is created that allows its observer to exist, but only to extinguish them completely after a short while. Like Boltzmann Brain, this is a study in command technique: one instrument governs the actions of another. In this case, the drums are set to repeat a short pattern over and over, while the snare orders various interruptions, such as breaking the pattern, or causing it to invert pitches, etc. Eventually the drums begin losing pitches from their parts, until almost nothing remains, and the piece ends.

In an alternative interpretation, The Anthropic Principle may be grouped with ecosystem percussion pieces such as Crepuscular.
