Two Passacaglias (2015)

Because the style of my earlier guitar chaconnes was inspired by Pachelbel's chaconnes, and Pachelbel never composed any passacaglias – or at least none have been found as of 2015 – I felt that I could choose any form for the genre, given how many different interpretations of both chaconne and passacaglia existed in the 17th century. I ended up doing these two short somber pieces in which the ostinato pattern doesn't stay in one place, but moves. The passacaglias were originally named after two unusual types of ancient coffins. If you look carefully, you can see how a graveyard cross is formed by the notation in the first bar of either piece.
