Phoenix
for wind instrument and marimba

Work no. 46
2013

Paused...

These pieces are meant to be repeated several times, being based on Finnish and Karelian lullabies. The first is Tuuti, tuuti, tuuti, lasta, the second Minä laulan lapselleni ("I Sing to My Child"), and the third is the rather well-known Nuku, nuku, nurmilintu ("Sleep, Sleep, Bird of Grass"). That last title and the lyrics of the second lullaby (which involves birds) were among the reasons for the title of the collection, although it really refers to a type of fake currency.

I am very grateful to the Jyväskylä University Digital Archive for hosting an extensive and extremely well-maintained collection of folk tunes, which helped in creating these pieces. This was my second Finnish piece after Suomi Jukebox. It was followed, much later, by the ensemble piece Juhannusaatto.
