Three Variations on an Infinite Retrograde Canon
Work no. 155
My favorite Earle Brown piece is Summer Suite 95. I love the music, the self-published score, and I think it takes a lot of guts - audacity - to do something like that. The Three Variations are something of a homage to Summer Suite 95, but they also explores the terrain laid out in my ealier pieces Waves, and the conceptual notation of the Exopheromones. This music can be performed as a puzzle with missing pieces (supplied, or not, by the performer). It's also, technically, a ruin of another work, and it may be performed this way, too.
