One Finger Exercises
for piano and percussion

Work no. 183
2021

Paused...

This series of whimsical pieces, in which the piano part is always playable with one finger, started as a humorous comment on a conversation between friends. Having composed one piece, it was difficult to stop. After two more, I thought I would try to make them into a series of pieces for children. But things got out of hand very quickly with the subsequent pieces. I suppose this is intended for an adventurous pair of performers now.

The next piece I completed after these exercises was Xeriscaping, and it's a bit similar to them: a sombre piano part is punctuated by another instrument's irreverent little passages.
